Mechanical and self-cleaning filter to optimize suspended solids removal.
Overview
The Hydrotech™ Discfilter provides proven performance for today’s demanding wastewater treatment applications. Its innovative design and robust construction consistently produce high quality effluent despite high solids loadings and unstable or changing conditions.
Hydrotech™ Discfilters benefit from many patented designs including the oscillating backwash spray header, which provides efficient media cleaning while reducing water consumption by 20 percent.
In addition, its compact design results in two to three times more filtering area compared to drum filters of the same external dimensions. This makes it the ideal solution for recirculation systems, effluent polishing of wastewater, fine filtration of intake water, or other applications where a space-saving filter with fine filter openings and large filter area is required.
How Hydrotech™ Discfilter work
The process uses woven cloth filters mounted on multiple discs providing a large filtering area in a small footprint. The water to be treated flows by gravity into the center drum and then passes through the filter media mounted on both sides of the discs. The solids are retained on the media within the discs and the purified water flows to the collection tank. As the solids accumulate, the water level rises, triggering a level sensor that automatically initiates backwashing. The filtered effluent is pumped to the backwash spray nozzles, washing solids into the sludge trough as the discs rotate. 100 percent filtration capacity is continuously maintained, even during backwashing.

FAQ about Hydrotech™ Discfilter
How do you remove suspended solids from wastewater?
Suspended solids removal can be performed by filtration using disc filter technology. Filtration captures and removes the suspended solids by passing wastewater through a filter media.
What are disc filters used for in wastewater treatment?
The main application for disc filters in wastewater is for tertiary treatment also known as effluent polishing. Tertiary treatment consists of a third step in the process of wastewater treatment. More advanced and rigorous, it allows the removal of nutrients such as phosphorus, nitrogen, microplastics and practically all suspended and organic matter from wastewater. The most common treatment in a wastewater treatment plant is primary and secondary treatment while the tertiary treatment ensures a better outlet quality for the recipient or in reuse applications.
Why is it important to remove suspended solids from water?
High total suspended solids levels in the water can cause severe harm to wildlife and aquatic life and can even be hazardous to human health. For this reason, total suspended solids must meet levels defined by state regulations. As such, municipalities follow strict regulations regarding water quality discharge to provide safe and reliable water sources to protect both the environment and its citizens.
Case Studies
Located in Sinai, east of the Suez Canal in Egypt, the Bahr El-Baqar plant HydrotechTM Discfilter installation is by far the biggest in the world, both in the number of filters supplied and total filtration area. This helps reduce the environmental impact of the wastewater treatment plant and reduce water intake from the Nile overall.
